Adoption Requirements

If adopters have a yard, it must be fenced. Invisible fences are not acceptable.

Adopters understand that greyhounds are house dogs and family members. They are not to be kept outside or shut away from the family inside the house.

Adopters understand that retired racing greyhounds MUST BE KEPT ON LEASH AT ALL TIMES unless in a controlled situation such as their home or a fully fenced area.

Adopters understand that for the first few weeks, the Greyhound needs to be let out halfway through the day if the family is away from home all day.

Adopters must understand that it takes three months on average for the dog to be totally settled into its new home and routine, and must be willing to be patient with the dog for this period.

Adopters must realize that they will probably spend $1200-2000 dollars a year on vet bills, medicine, and food for their dog. This is not something to be taken lightly. Greyhounds frequently have dental issues that require a dental cleaning. If you are unable to afford this, a greyhound might not be for you. It often takes months, sometimes a year or more to get them clear of hookworm infections. And even though they are bred for good athletic ability and health, they are 5 times more likely to develop osteosarcoma as other pure breeds.

Once you have been pre-approved for adoption by a GPAGNW representative they will work diligently to help you choose the right Greyhound for your lifestyle and family, as well as offer continued support once a Greyhound has been placed into your home.
